There was a strange scene at Derby, where the mourners had to fill in a grave owing to a strike of gravediggers for increased wages. Until a settlement is reached the bereaved must dig the graves of those they wish to bury.
The Colonial Office reports that a hundred townspeople and six members of a levy force were killed at Kireuk. Mesopotamia, on May 4, as the result of a conflict. The outbreak was due to a number of ti e levy force seizing arms and breaking loose, in spite of the officers’ efforts, on learning that three shopkeepers had assaulted three of their comrades during an altercation. Order has been restored.
An electric train, travelling at 15 miles an hour, crashed into a goods train waiting to enter the Royal Park Station’, Melbourne, completely wrecking a van and derailing six trucks. Hie guard had a miraculous escape from death, being flung full length of the van and buried beneath the wreckage. He only suffered abrasions and shock. The (.river of the electric train ’also escaped, though his van was partially wrecked. No pasengers were seriously injured.
