AMUSEMENT TAX
ABOLITION SOUGHT SPORTS BODIES TO WAIT ON GOVERNMENT The New Zealand Sports Protection League is organising a deputation to wait upon the Government and ask for the abolition of the amusement tax on sport. Last evening the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association decided to support this move and nominated delegates to represent it upon the deputation. In a letter to the association, Mr. R. AV. Shallcross, general secretary of the Sports Protection League, pointed out that some exemptions had been granted, but said it was fully expected that sports’ bodies would, by this time, have been fully relieved from the payment of the amusement tax in the same way as agricultural associations were exempted. “It appears necessary, therefore, that further pressure should be brought to bear upon the Government to impress it with the necessity of giving this question urgent attention,’' he added. ‘•'The League is organising a representative deputation to wait upon the Government for the purpose and with the object of securing favourable consideration to other questions affecting sports bodies.” The interview will take place shortly before Parliament assembles. Messrs. A. T. Davies and A. B. Sievwright were chosen to represent the association on the deputation.
