RAIN AGAIN SPOILS AWAY PROMINENT TEAMS SUFFER Most of Saturday’s hockey games were spoilt by the heavy rain which camo down shortly after play had commenced, and many prominent teams suffered a reversal when tho ball and stick became greasy. AVakatu defeated Hutt Bin a hard, open game, and AVellington succumbed to Hutt A by a very narrow margin. AVesley outplayed Petone, and Karori seniors and juniors enjoyed a victory. In the ladies’ matches, Hutt and Ramblers won their games in tho senior division. SENIOR HUTT A V. WELLINTON. As was to be expected when two good teams met, a hard-hitting, swift game resulted, but there was a lack of brilliancy. Hutt took charge in the first spell, and worked their backs to some purpose, while L. Thorpe played a sound game at left half. Fast as tho play was, AVellington’s defensive game kept them safe, and the first spell ended with no score. Wellington assumed the aggressive in the second stage, and apparently enjoyed the slippery ground and greasy ball. A heady passing forward nish looked hopeful, but the goalie turned the play. The visitors were caught napping a few minutes later, when R. Lusty got possession and followed through well. There was no change in the scores when the whistle sound five minutes later. Hutt A, 1; Wellington, nil. Mr. R. J. Lloyd had charge of tho game. KARORI DEFEAT ’VARSITY, All the bright play offering in the game between ’Varsity and Karori was witnessed in the first spell, when tho play was swift enough to warrant two referees. A. AL Cousins’s absence weakened the ’Varsity team, while C. Aloore proved a versatile player as right wing. At the change over, Afoore had netted well on two occasions for Karori, while ’Varsity, in spite of clever play on tho part of Foden and Beere, could not break through. Both teams tried vainly to get tho ball through by the scoop shot, which, under the circumstances, was ineffective as against snappy, short passing. Greasy sticks and balls in the second spell, when the rain came down heavily, robbed the game of a probable sparkling finish. Final scores were: Karori, 2; ’Varsity, nil. Tho referee was Air. A. J. AVebbor. AVAKATU V. HUTT B. Flayed at Hutt, the Wakatu-Hutt B game might have gone either way. At tho commencement the teams were evenly balanced, but when the rain set in play deteriorated, and the visitors scraped home with a goal to spare. AVakatu, 4; Hutt B. 3. Mr. Keys held the whistle. AVESLEY V. PETONE. Wesley had the best of their encounter with Petone, whom they defeated by four goals to two. There were some bright exchanges, and Petono missed several goed opportunities. The AVesley forwards worked well together. AVesley, 4: Petono 2. Air. B. Ginger controlled the game. LOWER GRADES JUNIOR. ’Varsity A (4) defeated ’Varsity B (2); Karori (4) defeated Y.M.C.A.
