CROSS BENEFIT FUND

CITY COUNCIL VOTES A SUBSIDY

GOOD OFFER BY PUBLIC TRUSTEE

Mr. H. D. Bennett presided at a meeting of the general executive of the Mrs. William Cross Benefit Fund Committee held yesterday. After a general statement as to the work of the organisation. the chairman said that what the committee should aim at was the missing of a sum of £l5OO. so that with the £lOOO in hand, there would be an assured income for the widow and her son. The City Council had granted £2;ii) on top of the accident fund’s £750. so that would leave them a sum of £l5OO from all sources, which he thought they would find little difficulty in raising, in view of the merit of the case. He read a letter from Dr. Robertson, eulogising the character of the deceased, ■ and enclosing a cheque for £5 55., which was thankfully received. The Public Trustee wrote that he would be only too glad to act as trustee, or ns trustee acting with any advisory trustees the committee might appoint, invest the money raised in the common fund at 5 per cent., or in any special way, free of all charges. The chairman considered the offer a timely and most generous one, and replied to it in such terms.

In the course of the meeting, Mr. J. Griffiths (master carriers) said that lists had been circulated, and the response was certainly very good. Mr. 11. J. Stott said he had issued some 800 circulars to members of the Wellington Automobile Club, the previous day, and had already received some seventeen cheques. lie had spoken on tho telephone that morning with the secretary of the Wairnrapa Automobile Club, who reported that lie had received several contributions to the fund, which would be forwarded to "Wellington in due course. It was decided by the committee that tho need in this case was very urgent, and that lists be sent out to such bodies as might wish to contribute their mite towards this most deserving fund. It was announced that the Artillery Band, under Lieutenant Herd, had offered to give a performance at Lyall Bay on Sunday afternoon, and that the late Mr. Cross’s fellow-inspectors would act as collectors. CONCERT TO-MORROW NIGHT. The public is reminded of the fine eacred concert to be given in aid of the Cross Benefit Fund at the Town Hall to-morrow evening. The programme, arranged by Mr. H. Temple White, is quite an exceptional one, and late special cars are being provided so that all may attend with the certainty ol there being transport to every part of the city at the close of the concert.
