DECLINES IN EXCHANGES
FALL IN STERLING AND THE FRANC. (Rec. May 9, 9.5 p.m.) New York, May 8. Threats of industrial and political disturbances caused a day of disastrous declines in exchanges. Sterling closed at 4.364 dollars, representing an overnight loss of nearly 2) cents. The franc reached 5.910 cents, r *?P r °" senting an overnight decline of 48 points. International bankers, however, expressed an assurance that the franc would shortly emerge in the ascendant, because the Bank of France has not yet seen fit to re-enter the market and extend support. —Aus.-N.Z.
