NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”) Acceptances for the first day s events of the Egmont Racing Chib s winter meeting will close on I 1 riday at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting will close on Friday. To “Inquirer” :— Although Whittier took the Australasian mile record from Thespian by 1-lOsec., when he won the Doncaster Handicap, the Now Zealand record is still, held by the son of Absurd. His time was liniu. 36 3-sseo.. put up at Ellerslie. To “E. W.,” New Plymouth The official scratching times were: Trespass 11 a.m. and Sunart 11.30 a.m. on the day of the race. The autumn meeting of the Hawke s Ray Jockey Club will be held to-mor-row and Saturday. The two Comedy King colts purchased in Sydney by J. H. JefferJ for Mr. A. B. Williams arrived in Wellington by the Ulimaroa. yesterday. Mr. W. J. Jorgensen’s horses, Tutankhamen, Tanodees, and Ma Boughal, who have been held up at Riccarton on account of the railway strike, arrived here Ly the Wabine yesterday morning. Messrs. A. B. and K. S. Williams, who have been on a vis't to Sydney, where they witnessed some of racing at the recent Randwick carnival, returned by the Ulimaroa yesterday. Mark Tima is being hacked, about again at Bulls. He has put on a lot of condition during his spell. The New Zealander General Advance was given the substantial weight of 12st. 121 b. in the second steeplechase at Randwick, won on Saturday by Chrvsostom. General Advance did not accept.

Solfanello has been engaged in hack hurdle races at Wanganui, as well as in the two open sprints. Tn addition to Solfanello. Air. K. D. Duncan has engaged Ares, Militaire, and Bright Eyes at the meeting. Other horses from Trentham nominated are Dick, Scintillation, and Eonmark. from C. Pritchard’s stable. Spoony, trained by F. Quinlivnn and Carawock, who is under J. W. Lowo. Carawock has also been nominated for Auckland), and ho was entered for both meetings in.case of the Sydney trip not eventuating. Neata and Omahu have been nominated for both Great Northerns, and also for the chief flat race, the Cornwall Handicap. at the Ellerslie winter meeting. En Route is to make another attempt to win the chief hurdle events at Wanganui and Ellerslie this year. Last season he fell at Auckland when going well. Spoony, who is not yet out of hacks, and has only a maiden at Tauherenikau to his credit, has been nominated for tho Cornwall Handicap at the Auckland winter meeting. . He is also in hack races at Wanganui.

Tho loss of the stallion King John is not the only ill-luck experienced by At*". Lowrv of late. Information from Hawke’s Bay is to the effect that tho Sunstar mare Paradise Duck, who was imported from England last year by Air. Lowry, died recently at the Okawa Stud. Paradiso Duck cost ATr. Lowry 1000 guineas when he bought her as a "yearling. Paradiso Duck managed to win £914 as a two-year-old, but she was a failure at a year older.

The reported deal in connection with the purchase of General Carrington by Mr. H. Marshall, has so far missed fire, and there is every probability that the aciding will raeo in the interests of his breeder, Mr. Gaine Carrington. this week at Hastings. Iftllymona’s stake-earnings for this season now amount to approximately £12,250. Ho has prospects of still adding to his score, ns the field o|>posed to him in the J. D. Ormond Memorial Gold Cup at Hastings on Saturday is a weak ono. Taking into consideration his two-year-old earnings, the Nassau gelding has now amassed something in tho neighbourhood of £13,000. F. D. Jones has also had a successful time with others of his team, and tho approximate winnings for the stable in New Zealand and Australia this season amount to £19.000. Maurihaiipo has been the unlucky member. Ho has earned £l5OO, which, with n spico of good fortune, might have aun into a great

deal more. During the period under discussion Murihaupo has raced IS times for one win, five seconds, and six thirds. The sensational dividend of over £4OO paid at the Avondale races on Saturday on Karamu, the rank outsider of a large field in the Hobsonvillo Hurdles, is the largest ever returned bv the totalisator in the Auckland district. Excitement was intense as the dividend was posted on the board (says an exchange), and a rush was made to the pay-out windows of the totalisator house to see the lucky investors collect their haul. It is said that Air. W. J- Hawkins, the owner, did not share jn'the phenomenal return made by Karamu, but that his father held a£l ticket. "he trainer (Mr. F. Gilchrist), of Ellerslie, is also stated not to have fancied the chance of tho animal, which has been under his care only a few weeks. A friend of Mr. Hawkins, hailing from Clevedon,- however, is reported to have been more venturesome and to have put £1 on the horse. A Hindu, who was said to have three 10s. tickets on tho winner, was surrounded by a great crowd as he left the totalisator stuffing rolls of notes into every pocket. He was closely shepherded by a fellow countryman, who had evidently decided to get him awav from the course as quickly as possible. They walked towards the gates, followed by a good humoured crowd, and then an enterprising taxi/lriver, quickly sizing up the situation, escorted them to his car. Search for n Chinaman, who is popularly supposed to participate in all largo dividends, proved fruitless, byt there was some talk of a Maori woman who had been lucky enough to strike the winner. “We have had a very successful trip,” said Air. Al B. Williams, the well-known owner of Rapine, yesterday, to a Dominion reporter soon after he arrived from Sydney by tho Ulimaroa. “I saw Rapine run twice, and naturally I am more than pleased with his performance. I expect that Rapine will come to Wellington by’ the next boat leaving Sydney. I intended to ship him to Auckland, and then down by the Arahura, but now that the railway strike seems to be at an end that is unnecessary. In Australia I secured two yearlings, and have brought them with me.” RACING IN ENGLAND GREAT METROPOLITAN STAKES, tendon, April 29.
