HARRIERS
OPENING OF THE REASON
The opening of the harrier season at Byall Bay on Saturday last was marred by the very heavy rain squalls that were sweeping over Wellington during the afternoon, but in spite of the weather. a good number of harriers and their supporters turned up. The Mayor, Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., in opening tho season, expressed his pleasure at tho large attendance, and drew attention to tho spirit of hardiness inculcated by harrierism. At the conclusion of his remarks some 70 to 80 harriers set off on their journey, making a fine sight as they across the beadh. although the pack was oftimes completely obscured by blinding squalls of rain. At the conclusion of the run a race was held in Freyberg Street over the last COO yards, a very interesting contest resulting. From a good start Barker, Campbell, and Perston immediately went to tho front, and it was easily seen that the race would result in a struggle between these three. With. 50 yards to go Barker cracked on the pace, and though the others tried doggedly to hold him, he gradually drew away, to win by 5 yards from Campbell, with Perston only a yard further back. Result: D. Barker (Hutt Valley), 1; C. Campbell (Olympic), 2; J. Perston (Olympic). Much credit is due to'Mr. Wright and those club officials who, in spits of the atrocious weather, were present to give a helping hand at the opening run.
