Mr. H. D. Bennett was yesterday elected president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. After tying warmlv welcomed, Mr, Bennett said he realised that th© chamber must retain its reputation of being the leading chamber in New Zealand, and th© cooperation of members would assure this.

Mr. J. Myers was referred to in appreciative terms by members of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday, when vacating the president’s chair. It was stated that the efforts of Mr. Myers had been largely instrumental in gaining for the Wellington Chamber the reputation of always being looked to give a lead in all matters in its sphere of activity.

The appointment was announced yesterday of Mr. William Cullen to the position of Chief Inspector of Machinery, in succession to Mr. Hood, who recently retired from the post. Mr. Cullen, who was born at Baillieston, in the county of Lanarkshire, in Scotland, in IS6I. came cut to New Zealand at an early age. He was in the sendee of the Union Steam Ship Company from the year 1883 to 1900, and attained the post of chief engineer. which he held for some six and a half vears. After that Air. Cullen was employed in the sei vice of the Taranaki Producers’ Freezing Works, and remained there until ho joined the Government service in April of 1904. From 1908 to 1922 Mr. Cullen was a machinery inspector at Palmerston North, hut in 1922 came to Wellington as a senior inspector.

Mr. Beauchamp Lane, a prominent Christchurch lawyer, died on Friday after a fairly long illness. He was a native of Christchurch, having heen born there sixty years ago, and was a son of the late Mr. W. H. Lane, He was educated nt Christ’s College and at Cheltenham College, England. When his education was completed he was articled to Messrs. Garrick, Cowlishaw, and Fisher. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in I.SS6. In 1890 he joined Mr. A. Loughrey in practice in Christchurch, the firm taking the title of Loughrpy and Lane. After this firm had heen dissolved. Mr. Lane took Mr. K. Nc.ivc into partneruhip. He married the vounnost daughter of the late Mr. H. P. Mlirray-Aynsley. and leaves n widow, but no family. Mr W. J. Aitken, guard, of Christchurch, has been elected to represent the second division (traffic and stores) of the South Island Railway Anneal Board, in the place of Mr. M. Connelly, who recently resigned.
