CHINESE BANK RAIDED

£6O STOLEN BY WHITE MEN ANIMATED SCRAMBLE IN HAINING STREET A Chinese “banking” house in Haining Street, was raided by two white men last night, and a substantial roll of notes was smartly intercepted when being paid to a Chinaman. The incident was sufficient to turn out the whole local population, talking, gesticulating, but no one went in pursuit, or carried the chase beyond Taranaki Street. Apparently the two men had prepared for the robbery whilst in the establishment for .the ostensible purposes of “marking a ticket,” watched a favourable opportunity, and when the money flashed into view they made a bold snatch at it, together with several, jxmnds in silver and copper One Chinaman, who quickly perceived what was afoot, i4'<le an attempt.to check the thieves, but was put quickly out of action. Rushing out of the house, the man who had taken the coins stumbled, and his precious booty was scattered all over the road. He quickly gathered himself together, and joined his companion and disappeared into the darkness. Then the news spread through Haining Street, and there was a general sei amble for the coms, the protestations of the owners of the cash sounding very weak against the general hubbub. . “Here’s the police,” said a Chinese voice, and the effect was. electrical. Haining Street assumed its usual placid serenity. “No, no one lost anything—mo trouble —vella, vella quiet, Mr. Policeman.” was the reassuring note struck bv one little Chinaman, forgetting that a minute or two before a countryman had stated that between £6O and £<o had been stolen The “policeman hapiiened to be a Dominion representative, whose duty carried him past the animated spot.
