SKILLED ARTISANS
SUGGESTION FOR TRAINING APPRENTICES An important change in the method of training apprentices in New Zealand was foreshadowed by the Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of Education) when performing the opening ceremony at the new Wellington Technical College yesterday afternoon. The secondary businesses in New Zealand, deflared the Minister, were not being filled up by the young people as they should be. The best asset any country could have was a large body of skilled artisans. It had been suggested that apprentices should be trained in the technical schools. If this were done, the employers would have to see to it that they were provided with adequate buildings in order that they might train apprentices for the various trades. With only half-a-million to spend on new buildings over the whole of the Dominion, the Government could not supply anything but necessities, but at the same time ho heartily supported Mr. Howell’s appeal for an assembly hall. One thing he would promise that the Government would assist them with this year was an advance towards the erection of workshops.
