Br Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, April 19. In a case before the Magistiate (Mr. Maunsell) to-day, wherein Clouston and Pyne, stock agents, sued Hugh Berryman, of Nelson, for the recovery of A'6B 175., balance due on a line of sheep purchased by the defendant at auction, Mr. A. E. L. Scantlebury (for defendant) moved for a non-suit on tho grounds that the persons suing were tho auctioneers, and they had no cause of action. If the auctioneers had no lien, said counsel, they had no right to sue. The Magistrate indicated that the point was a fine one, and had never before been raised in the Dominion, and said he would reserve decision. BRITAIN’S IMPORTED MEAT SOUTH AMERICAN SUPPLIES. The bulk of Britain’s supply of meat, freeh. and refrigerated, is being obtained from foreign, sources, mainly boutn America. This point is emphasised in Weddel’s review of the meat trade. It is pointed out that Britain’s supply of meat from the British Dominions was shrinking, while foreign supplies were increasing rapidly. Out of tho 933,699 tons of beef, mutton, and lamb imported into Great Britain last year, only 263,214 tons, or 28 per cent., were produced within the Empire. In 1922 the proportion. was 35 per cent., and in 19'20 it was 40 per cant. It bad hitherto been claimed that, although the Mother Country was obliged to take the bulk of its beef supplies from foreign sources, in the production of mutton and lamb the Dominions were supreme, both in quantity and quality. According to Messrs. Wcddel and Co. that supremacy is now being challenged by South America, from whence 38 per cent, of the mutton and lamb imports were received last year. So recently as 1920 tho proportion shipperl by South America was only 16 per cent. As regards quality, South America_ seems to be incapable of producing mutton and lamb of the high standard attained by New Zealand growers, but_a great improvement has been noticeable in recent, .years, and Argentine mutton can now command a considerable premium over tho price of Australian mutton, though it is etill much cheaper than the New Zealand article.
