EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night. Tho Deputy-Mayor (Councillor H. AV. Shortt) presided, and there were also present:—Councillors C. A. Marquis. C. Hartridge, H. J. Levy, E. A. Dawson, and 11. M. Jones The resignation of Councillor C. Bowden from tho council was accepted wjtu regret. , Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P-. wrote stating that authority had been inven for the erection of a new post office, and the work would be proceeded with as soon as possible. The secretary of the Post nnd Telegraph Department advised that arrangements had been made for a night telephone an the borough. The general manager’s report was adopted. He stated that the sea-wall at Mantoll’s corner, completed according to contract, had withstood the recent southerly storm. Ho recommended that a further stretch of 100 yards northwards be erected forthwith, tho cqst to the council not to exceed £lOO. The labour would bo more costly than before owing to the' fact that the wall would be along high-water mark most of tho way. Ho considered the recreation ground to bo looking well. There was a considerable falling off in the returns from the tennis scurfs. The total revenue received was £267 Ils. 3d. Due to the convictions obtained, motor-speeding in the borough had undoubtedly abated. Building permits to the value of £822 had boon issued. From April 1, 1923, to date 71 permits had been issued, representing buildings of an estimated’ value of £28.590. The report also contained the ferry traffic returns for the month, which showed that 99.916 passengers were carried by the Imats in February. 1924, and 88,072 in February, 19'23. an increase of 11,874 passenger's. "Considering tho very severe southerly of last week,” the report concluded, “the fleet camo through, very satisfaofo> - il.v. With tho exception of two middlc-day rums, a full time-table was maintained, though w« were obliged to cut out berthing at Rona Bay on several trips. The Cobar sustained damage to belting nnd bulwarks on the starboard side. Tho Duchess’ belting on the port side also suffered. Returns of cargo service are well ahead of previous years, nnd. the through freight scheme will bo commenced on April I next.” It is understood (not officially) that there will he a new valuation of the borough at an early date.
