The New South AVales team commenced their match with the East Coast eleven this afternoon at Nelson Parti in the presence ot a bout tuna spectators. There was perfect weather a good wicket, and a fast outfield. The East Coast team took first strike and although they did not put up a big score they gave a very creditable exhibition, all the batsmen playmg the bowling with confidence. O Connell, who made top score with 50, gave a bright display; lie showed a variety of good shots along the carpet, driving particularly well. The homo, side, however, showed lack of enterprise m running between the wickets,. numerous runs being lost by dilatoriness in this respect. The innings realised 166. and lasted 151 minutes. Th© visitors commenced batting at 5 25, and play ceased at 6.25 owing to failing light. During that short period Andrews and Hendry rattled, on 87 runs, treating-the loose bowling of Bernau and O’Connell with scant respect. At a meeting of the Canterbury Jricket Association an account was received from the Umpires Association for six guineas for refereeing in the Now South AValos-Canterbury match; .also, a request that the association should forward umpires’ fees tlnough the ; Umpires’ Association. Delegates pointed out that some umpires would not accept fees, and in such cases the Cricket Association should not be called on to pay.
