‘DISGRACE TO HER SEX’
WOMAN SENT TO PRISON FOR OBSCENE LANGUAGE

Christchurch, March 17. “T have tried to close up your filthy mouth on a previous occasion by imposing a fine. You are nothing more or less than a disgrace to your sex ” These comments were uttered by the Magistrate (Mr. Maunsell) to-day in sentencing a married woman named Elizabeth J. McCormack to two months’ imprisonment for using obscene language. A few weeks ago both the woman and liier husband were fined £5 for a similar offence. When the present case was called on this morning there was no appearance of defendant, and the Magistrate gave instructions to issue a warrant for her arrest.
In reply to a question accused said that she knew nothing about tho charge.
