“I am afraid our smoke concerts are becoming political meetings studded with long drv speeches, instead of a musical evening for .he entertainment of visitors.” stated Air. G. H. Perry at the. Alasterton A. and P. Association meeting, when the smoke concert accounts were being passed for payment (says the “AVairarapa Aga ). Air. L>. McGregor contended that the “smokeoh” had departed from the purposes it was intended for. His conception of its purpose was for the outside exhibitors and judges to gather together, express their opinions on the show, and incidentally learn a few points from each other.
The borough pound-keeper is reported to have “struck trouble,, or rather to have been struc 1 - by it in the form of an irate resident of a salubrious suburb who took violent objection to the officer’s proper performance of his unpleasant duty (relates the “AVanganui Cnronicle”), It appears that in the course of his official perambulation the officer espied a calf illegally astray- on the public highway, and having ascertained the name of the owner thereof, proceeded to his, 1 residence for tho purpose of notifying nim (as is the usual procedure in such cases) that he could save poundage charges and secure immediate possession of the animal by payment ~f the stipulated driving fee. The owner s response to this courteous intimation, so it is alleged, was a vigorous right to the nose, •’■ccompanied bv an equally forceful verbal onslaught and an invitation to fight, which of course.was not accepted. The bellicose individual is to be afforded an opportunity of explaining his conduct to the magistrate.
