CHINESE AT NAURU

ACCOMMODATION FOR WIVES OFFERED

London, February 19.

In the House of Commons, replying to Mr. J. W. Black (L.), who suggested steps to secure that henceforth Chinese contract labour, employed on Nauru phosphate mining, should only be recruited under tho proviso that a certain proportion of womenfolk accompanied the men, Air. J. H. Thomas, Secretary for the Colonies, said that the British Phosphate Cominissimui’s had informed him that many Chinese were offered free accommodation for their wives at the island, but hitherto the social prejudices of the Chinese had prevented more than very few waiy.cn taking advantage of this. —Reuter.
