NEW SOUTH WALES V. SOUTH CANTERBURY HOME TEAM STARTS WITH 256 By Telegraph.— Press Association. Ashburton, February 12. The New South Wales cricket team was given a civic reception to-day. The weather, though overcast, is favourable for cricket. Play in the match against South Canterbury started at 2 p.m. The Australians won the toss and put Ashburton in. The local team batted 13 men, and fielded 11. Everett opening the bowling, but after getting one wicket in the first over was replaced by Kippax, who, with Andrews, kept the batsmen quiet. The Australians gave numerous bowlers a turn, and runs came more quickly from Punch and R. Bardsley. Hendry and Alailey followed them, and kept the scoring down. The visitors’ fielding was excellent, and Ratcliffe was smart behind the wickets. The batsmen were not at home with the slow bowling, which took most of the wickets. Batting for Ashburton, Nicoll played a sound innings for 15, smothering breaks from Kippax and Andrews. Tasker and Burns were forceful, but took many risks. Holford played a good innings for 59. The tail wagged a great deal and brought the score finally to 256. Owing to the small field conducive to boundary hits, the first century was compiled in 68 minutes, and the second in 125 minutes. Punch and Alullarkey opened the visitors’ innings at 5.30 p.m. to the Irowling of Burns and Brennan. After a few singles and a 4, Bums got Punch with a yorker. 20 —I—ls.1 —15. R. Bardsley followed him, and put one in the slips from Burns. The ball bounced out of Chapman’s hands into Fryer’s. 30 —2 —3.
