THE RACING WORLD
ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY AT DUNEDIN
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By
“The Watcher.”)
The Dunedin and Gisborne meetings will be concluded to-day, when the To Kuiti meeting will also bo held. Acceptances for the jubilee meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club w:JI <:l<i-c to-day. The Trcssady two-year-old Trosham was generally regarded as the best juvenile in the South Island, but he had a close call in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes from the Chokebore Lodge candidate Gamebag, who was minus a penalty. After the race G. Young, rider of Gamebag, complained that he had been blocked by Were on the wiuner, but as Young had tried to get up on the rails the stewards took no action. Income started a good favourite in the Egmont Cup, hut ho finished last. Footfall, try Autumnus out of that good mare Warstep, was expected to race well in the two-year-old race at Dunedin on Thursday. Ho was last whan half the journey had been covered and finished fourth. He is top veight in the Hopeful Handicap to-day, in which the opposition is very moderate. The goiug was vpry hard at AVingatui on Thursday, and several buses were unable to hit out freely. C. Pritchard will take Martinique, i Bayana, and Lady Halina to Nelson, anil J. AV. Lowe will probably. take Laughing Stock. The two-vear-old Kilniar will be sent over for the racing at Blenheim. Several other T.>entham trained horses are likely to go over for the Marlborough circuit, 1 tit the detailed arrangements are not yet decided. The- dual victory of Ares at the Egm.ont meeting has been very well received in local sporting, circles, as Mr. K D. Duncan has nat had tnc best of luck with his team recently. Lake Urn. who won the Electric Handicap on Thursday, is raced on lease by R. D. O’Donnell. Pent Etre, the two-year-old filly by Martian-Revalenta, showed promising form at Egmont, finishing third and second in her respective engagements. Early in the season she was very moderate, but being on the small side time will no doubt do a lot for her, and she is now beginning to improve. Santiago has been well fancied by his partv for his recent engagements, but ho has failed to show up. Ho could not win at Trentham, and Jip was not sighted on the second day at Hawera. Cross country horses now in work in the South Island include Palencia, Pamplona, and Lochella. The ccnr.ections of the latter have every hope that he will stand another preparation. Petunia, formerly trained at Trentham, but now at Riccarton, is again in work. Air. G. D. Greenwood has both Gloaming and Haze engaged in the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton next Saturday. Haze is a twd-vear-old colt by Demosthenes —Scotch Light. He started twice at the New Zealand Cup meeting, in the Welcome Stakes and Spring Nursery, both unplaced performances. Others still in the race next week are Murihaupo, Winning Hit. Top Score, La Reve, Tresham, and Hoariri. The latter is at Ellerslie, and probably remains in through an oversight. Reports from Auckland state that Musketoon’s next mission will Le the Wanganui Cup. He is being kept going at Ellerslie, and is looking very
well. F. Tilley had an i unsuccessful trip to Hawera with Demand ."nd Para. The latter ran third the first day, and Demand filled a similar petition in the big handicap on Thursday. As a result of two successes at Egmont on Thursday, when he rode Roman and Euchre, the Trentham horseman A. Heed is now equal with M. McCarten in the, lead for the jockey premiership, with 23 winning rides. McCarten’s luck is right out at present. It is expected that the Absurd—Bronze filly, which hurt one of her legs when a- few days old, will stand a preparation all right, and she will later on be sept in to. join Air. Currie’s other youngsters in AV. Rayner’s stable. Kerb is reported as having been a bit unlucky in the Publicans’. Handicap at Dunedin on Thursday, in which some crowding took 'place at tho finish. She may do better in the Flying Handicap to-day. A very small field of five has accepted in the principal event, no doubt owing to the hard state of the going. Boadicea won over a mile and a quarter at AVingatui . in the spring, and she has been doing good work on the tracks. ' The older division in the Hazlett ATcmorial Plate will probably find difficulty in conceding the weight to Murihaupo. Loughrea has earned the full penalty of a stone, but all the same be looks as if he might prove the most dangerous opponent of the three-year-old. > Startle, the half-sister to Scotch Alixturc, was well fancied for her engagement on the opening day at Gisborne, but failed to fill a place. She may do better to-day. J. O’Shea will do the riding for Mr. G. L. Stead at Te Kuiti to-day. H. Dulieu, who won the Te’ Kuiti Cup on Ruapapa last year, will be on Glencairn in to-day’s race. Regent ran a good second to Finelli at Hamilton last Cup meeting there.
Both are engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap at To Kuiti to-day, the ’ weights being all in favour of the former. Prettyman' will bo well supported this afternoon in the To Kuiti Cup on tho strength of his good showings at Ellerslie and Takapuna. Pretty-' man is by tho defunct Maniapoto. 11. Wiggins will ricle Tinokalia and Jolly Gay at Te Kuiti. AV. Rayner is letting Motley take things very quietly (says a AVanganui exchange), present intentions being to keep her for the Manawatu Sires’ Produce, Stakes and the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. There is just a possibility she may bo a starter [ in the North Island Challenge Stakes, but this will depend on circumstances. Commenting on the race for the Egmont Cup, tho AVanganui “Chronicle” states: —“Tho race was run at a muddling pace, as will be seen when it is stated that, the first half-mile took 58 2-ssec., and the first mile Iniin. 50 2-ssec., the time for the full distance being 2min. 39 3-ssec. The last four furlongs were, cut out in 51 3-ssec., and it was here that the race was started and finished.’’ DUNEDIN ACCEPTANCES By TELEGRAm—Press Assoctation. Dunedin, February 8.
