BANK FRAUDS

ADMISSIONS OF ARRESTED ACCOUNTANTS

Melbourne, February 4. Detectives arrested Edward Potts and Albert Treloar, both accountants, in connection with bank frauds by means of forged correspondence. Giving evidence at the Police Court hearing on a charge of stealing £2500, the property of the English and Scottish Australian Bank, a detecti"e stated That on December 18 the Melbourne branches of the bank received letters stating that Mr. Russell, the son of a well-known Sydney racing man, would be visiting Melbourne, and would require a certain sum of money. Later, further letters were received confirming the code telegram. Specimen signatures had also been received from Sydney, these being written on the bank’s own forms. On December 21 Treloar, who was- then employed as accountant, victimised the bank and drew £3500 in fa'vour ol Potts, the latter presenting papers apparently in order. Potts some time later went to another branch bank, but the manager, suspicious, communicated with the police, who interviewed Treloar, and received a description of Potts. Warrants for the arrest of the two men were then issued. Treloar was taken to the watchhouse, where he confessed that he had entered into an agreement with Potts to obtain money from the bank. Potts was arrested, when he admitted that he had entered into an agreement with Treloar. The sum of £lO5O was recovered at Treloar’s homo. The detective further stated that the total amount the men attempted to get was £lo,ooo.—Press Assn.
