A HOAX EXPLAINED
“AUNT SALLY” LEFT ON HUTT ROAD
An explanation has been made of what in yesterday’s Dominion was described as “a foolish hoax.” The pßosencq of the “dummy” on the Hutt Road on Friday night ( and the cause of alarm to a motorist, was purely accidental, and by no means there for the purpose of a hoax. It was nothing less than the “Aunt Sally” which always accompanies members of the Public Works Department on their annual picnics. On Friday night the members wore returning from Maidstone Park in a motor-lorry heavily laden with baggage and other things, including the “Aunt Sally.” Approaching Kaiwarra the top of a cylinder blew out, and it became necessary to tow the lorry into town. It was then that “Aunt Sally” and a bag of wood fell off, blit the driver of the lorry did not hear the requests to stop. Strange to say it was the bag of wood which members of the picnic party regarded as most dangerous so that a car was sent out from town to collect it. However neither “Aunt Sally” nor the bag of wood were anywhere to be found.
