BREAKERS OF BY-LAWS

SHOULD APPEAR AT COURT PERSONALLY (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Nelson, January 28. Commenting on the practice cf defendants in by-law cases sending letters to Court instead of appearing in person, Mr. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day* ■-aid: '‘The impression seems to be gaining ground that when people are summoned, to attend the Court they have a license to write to the Court stating v.hat their offence is. It is to be understood that this is absolutely irregular, and in England the course is to treat such cases with more severity than is my course, bub it must be understood that I do not take these letters to he of the same value as sworn testimony. ’’
