* COUNTY COUNCIL. (From Our Own Corresoondont.) Carterton, January 26. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at Carterton on Saturday, Councillor I. V. Moore (chairman) presiding. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £4482 10s. 2d. on the general account. Since last meeting the sum of £lB9 15s. had been received. Accounts amounting to £2161 4s. 2d. were passed for payment. The Wairarana Automobile Association wrote asking that the creek and water-race in Moreton Road be bridged over. The Public Works Department wrote stating that the engineer’s report upon the Ruamahanga River bridge, Kokotau Road, was made solely for the information of the Hon. Minister, and they were therefore unable to supply a copy of same. —It was resolved that an engineer be engaged to furnish report. Mr. W, N. Kummer wrote confirming his offer of £5O for metalling Driscoll Road. £1 for £l. Mr. A. D. McLeod, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Public Works Department re the application for a free grant of £5OO from the Government to remove slips and complete metalling on the Wainuioru Valley Road. In view of the previous liberal assistance the Government has _ granted, the county on this road it is not considered a free grant is justified, but the Minster was agreeable to assist the council in removing the slips by authorising a £1 for £1 subsidy of £75 from the Consolidated Fund maintenance Messrs. Sladden and Pavitt, engineers, forwarded plans and estimates for Opoua creek, bridge, Flat Point Road. The estimates were:I—Reinforced 1 —Reinforced concrete bridge 25ft. span, with necessary wings and fillings, £2000; reinforced concrete bridge one span 30ft. and two spans of 15ft, with one shoot wing and practically no filling. £1400; reinforced concrete culvert and filling to give 20ft. roadway to narrowest place, £960. An estimate for culvert was £960. —It was decided to ask for further information. Saturday was fixed as the day for the weekly half-holiday within the county.
