The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., have recaived'the following cablegram from their London house, under date January 23:—Tallow: We quote present spot values for the following descriptions —Fine mutton, 51s per cwt.; good beef, 465. 6d. Per cwt. ; mixed, 435. 6d. per cwt. Market active. CANTERBURY MARKETS By Telegraph.— Press Association. Christchurch, January '25. There is a particularly brisk demand for all lines of seed, but high prices are being asked by growers for ryegrass, and perennial and Italian and Western wolths are reaching high level, and sales at up to 7s. have been made at country stations. Cocksfoot has been sold at up to Is. 2d. per lb. for standard seed, and up to IOJd. has been paid for Plains seed undressed. There is a strong North Island inquiry. Samples of the new season’s white clover have been offered, and the samples are exceptionally clean and bright. As a matter of fact, the season has been especially favourable for the production of good seed. The market for white has taken a decided firming, and up to Is. fid. per lb. has been paid for good stuff. As an offset to quality and price, however, the yields will be low —nrnbably no more than half those of last ver. The carry-over from last year has b>en bevy, and probably this will regulate the price to some extent. Now that seed has reached a good price, there is some interest being shown in cowgrass, but values* are unchanged. Wheat is now coming forward free’v, and is being promptly accepted. Samples generally are first-class. Fowl wheat is easier, and worth ss. 3d. f.0.b.. On Is have firmed up during the week, and B grade Gartons have been sold at 4s. per bushel f.o.b. 5.1., equal to 3s. Cd. at country stations. A’s are proportionately higher. Algerians are in very keen demand, and 4s. has been unit! nt country stations. Requirements fc.i sowing for green feed are heavier this year than usual on account of Qie uncertain position of root crops. Chaff also is in very keen demand, and sa.es have been made at £8 f.0.b., 5.1.. i< r prompt delivery, with quotations at jp to .£8 ss. Stocks are very light? Quotations for potatoes are £4 16:i. a ton on trucks, with very little offering. Opinions aro varied about the crops according to the locality from which opinions are expressed. However, boil- d down, the belief is that the yields will he on the light side. Early sown crops have been affected by the dry sp'-JI, and second growth is not infrequent. rin the other hand, later sown crops itnnire only ordinarv weather to bring them on satisfactorily. Onion crons are slightly bettor than they promised som» weeks ago. there being some nice fie’ds in the Marshlands district. Prompt delivery is quoted at .£5 per ton, February £4 10s., and March £4. HOROWHENUA SHOW The entries for the Horowhenua Association’s show, to be held on the Levin racecourse on January 30 and 31, are very satisfactory, and show a slight increase all round on the previous year. In the horse classes there promises to be some very high-classed competitors. The cattle section has filled remarkably well. Sheep have also made a forward move, owing no doubt to the more promising outlook lof the wwl market, which has given breeders more confidence. In the pig classes there are some forty odd entries as against twentyeight the previous year, and in those there will be some very choice exhibits. In all, the show promises to •be well ahead of previous ones, which fact is also borne out by the numerous applications for grouiwl space from side shows and other exhibitors, from which those not altogether keenly interested in stock will find plenty to attract them. DANNEVIRKE A. & P. SHOW Wednesday, Januai’y 30, is the last day upon which entries can bo made for the Dannevirke A. and P. Show without the imposition of an additional 2s. 6d. for each entry, and these will only bo received until February 1, tt 9 a.m. So far very satisfactory entries have been received, indicating that each section will be wolk.up to the standard of past years—in fact some of them appeiS likely to establish rew records. Entries for the annual rem fair, on February 15, close on February 4, and may bo sent to the various auctioneers or the secretary of Uni association. Those who desire space for trade exhibits are advised to make application for same without (’-‘lay, and those wanting information of any description concerning the show should get in touch at once with the secretary. Au event included in the schedule this year for the first time is a shoeing competition, the novelty of which should appeal and create keen interest.
