WINTER SPORTS CONTESTS. (Rec. January 28, 0.20 a.m.l London, January 27. For th© first contests cf the winter sports section of the eighth Olympiad at Chamonix there was fin© weather. There were twenty-seven competitors, representing ten nations. The 5<TO metres speed skating was won by the American, Jewtraw. Time, 44 seconds. Olsen, of Norway, was second The 5000 metres was won by 1 bunberg, of Finland, in Smin. 39 sec, Skutnabb, of Finland, being second. The Classification of the leading nations at the end of the day was:—Finland, points; Norway, 17J; United States, 11—Reuter.
