THE RACING WORLD

LOVESIGN. WINS SUMMER HANDICAP AT TRENTHAM

GLOAMING STILL CHAMPION

CITY HANDICAP WON BY CIVILITY

The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting was brought to a successful conclusion at Trentham on Saturday. 'There was another large attendance of the public,-who were treated to an ideal Summer’s day. The racing was interest 'ingall day. Gloaming made his reappearance on the track and was greeted with loud applause. He won his race in good style and on returning to weigh in was further applauded. The little-fancied Lovesign ran away with the Summer Handicap and Civility won the City Handicap in decisive fashion. The state of the track can be judged from the times recorded in the various races, ...

HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP, Th© High Weight Handicap was a jrreat betting event, Carawock finishing up the actual favourite. Eonmark, Palamon, Malingerer and Santiago led past’the stand, but going out of the straight Palamon had pulled to the front, followed by Epnanark, Malingerer and Santiago, with the favourite and Vagabond tailed off. Palamon was in front at the home turn, but Santiago ran past him followed by Carawock. The latter was in front at rhe two furlongs, when Vagabond came through with a strong challenge. He, however, could not reach the favourite, who won. by a bare length. Malingerer was a poor third, and San- . tiago next. WATERLOO STAKES. Gloaming made his reappearance in Uhe Waterloo Stakes. .He was, .of course, a very short priced favourite, but there was a little money for Nigger Minstrel and Glentruin. The trio went away in a line, but with half a furlong gone Nigger Minstrel ■was a length in front with the favourite and Glentruin together. The two-year-old was first into the straight, with Gloaming on his heels. At the distance Gloaming and Glentruin were on terms with the leader. Young kicked his mount and he forged ahead, holding his advantage to the post. He was a neck in front of Glentruin, who beat Nigger Minstrel by three parts of a length. HOPEFUL STAKES. Lady Bentinck was a good first choice for the, Hopeful Stakes Handicap, others in demand being Rachael and Siaosi. Subjection was slow to move off, and _ Bon March chopped • round and. unshipped her rider. Lady Bentinck and 1 Bonideer piloted the field on the course proper, with Falladeen, Rachael, and Lady Isinglass next. Lady Bentinck and Bonideer were in charge at the two furlongs, but the latter was stopping. Lady Bentinck finished best, and won by three parts of a length from the fast finishing Siaosi, who came on the outside of the field. Lake Uru also finished well, and was a neck behind the second horse. Rachael was fourth, and Bonideer next. MELROSE HANDICAP. Ihapotoa, Penelephon, the Higgins bracket (Parorangi and Sir Pam), and Basso were supported in that order for the Melrose Handicap. Kilris was first out from Panim, Imperial Spark, Ihapotoa, and Pantagruel. When the field settled down Panim was in front and had as his attendants Penelophon, Ihapotoa. Star Ranger, and gruel. Penelophon was first into the straight, ahead of Panim, Ihapotoa, and Pantagruel. The leader held her own and went on to win by a good length from Ihapotoa, with Pantar gruel two lengths away third. Bayana was fourth, Kilris fifth, and Passe and Koauau together next. SUMMER HANDICAP. All started in the Summer Handicap, Gold Light, Enthusiasm, and Roseday being the most sought after Ares wag first away, but he soon lost his place to Quest, Lovesign, and Counter Attack, Enthusiasm being last. Quest and Lovesign were together rounding the far bend, Martian Miss, Wild Hind, and Chimera being next. The leading pair wore the same at the turn, where Gold Light moved up into third position. Once in a line for home Lovesign ran away from the field and won easily by three lengths. Roseday, who came on the outside over the last two furlongs, beat Gold Light for second money by nearly two lengths. Queen March was fourth, Wild Hind fifth, and Ares next. Enthusiasm never improved her position at any part of the journey. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. Highland was a pronounced favourite for the Consolation Handicap, but there was also money for Bonetter and Mantua. A fine start saw Ardour rfm to the front, and going cut of the straight she was followed by Mantua, Winning Hit, and Zero _ Hour, with Highland tailed off. Ardour led past the mile post, where Winning Hit passed Mantua, Zero Hour still being fourth. The order was the same at the seven furlongs, Bonetter being in fifth position. Highland was moving up at the five furlongs, lut at the half-mile the order was Ardour, Winning Hit, Koatane, Zero Hour, and Bonetter, with Mantua last. Winning Hit and Ardour were on terms on entering the straight, but the latter soon fell away. Little River came through just above the distance, y hile Bonetter also made her run. The former had the most in reserve and came in first by two lengths. Mantua, on the rails, with a late effort cut Bonetter out of second money by half a length. Ardour was fourth, Winning Hit fifth, and Zero Hour* uext. CITY HANDICAP. Tulda, Rational, and Economist were all well backed in the City Handicap, but they were not in the hunt nt the finish. A bunch came down tn to the course proper, the colours of Civility, Kerb, Tukia. and Rational being prominent. Civility was first 'into the straight, and from then on never looked like losing, eventually winning by two lengths. Last Crust camo very strongly at the finish and beat Tukia by a head. Santonio was fourth and Rational and Kerb next.

KAITOKE HANDICAP. A surprise packet in Giantkiller won tho Kaitoke Handicap in the last few strides, downing Piquant, v’ho was always in the front, by a head. Geranial, who was in the first crowd all the way, just kept going long enough to jnake a dead heat for third money with th.a f as t finishing Entro Nous, -

Wormaid, Riocarton.) * NOTES ON THE RACING (By “Glencoe.”) The publio had matters fined down well in the High Weight Handicap. There was very little difference Between Vagabond and Carawock on the machine, and very little at the •finish. The younger horse is the most improved, and with 161 b. in his favour he outstayed bis opponent. Eonmark has had enough racing so A. Oliver thinks, and he has left him behind at Trentham. . Gloaming came home in the M aterloo Stakes, and got a great reception from the crowd. In the birdcage he looked well and showed evidence of having done a lot of work. He wore a plaster bandage on his doubtful joint, but in the preliminary moved very freely. This was enough for the public, and they sent him out at the usual Gloaming price. At the barrier he drew the inside, and when the tapes were released they went off at a slow pace. This was right into the hands of the favourite and after Nigger Minstrel had led him and Glentruin on to the course proper and for another furlong Young then got busy on the favourite just as the crowd was thinking that his day of reckoning had arrived. Responding to fa couple of kicks from his rider the champion went away and scored easier than most people thought. He got a good reception from the crowd. Gloaming’s next appearance will be in the Middle Park Plate, as he was not entered for the Taranaki Stakes. Neither was Nigger Minstrel, so Glentruin will go north and get the stake. Gloaming will then meet all comers in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui. Lady Bentinck was the correct favourite for the Hopeful Stakes, and after a scratchy start she took charge in the straight and won easily. There was a great finish for second place, and Siaosi got it from the fast finishing Lake Uru, Rachael and Bonideer. The latter showed a lot of pace, and it was only the last half furlong that found her out. Ihapotoa and Penelephon divided the machine honours in the Melrose Handicap, and how well the publio summed it up can be gauged from the fact that the pair filled the places. There was a lot of merit in the winner’s performance, for she drew a bad marble, but was soop in a good position and at the finish beat the favourite comfortably. Despite the hard time he has had Roseday saddled up well for the Summer Handicap for which he was not as well fancied as Gold Light and Enthusiasm. The top-weights were up against it for Lovesign bolted and ran a record for the . course. She got to the end of the milo in Imm. 37 2-ssec., which will show what chance the top weights had. Enthusiasm looked well, but a bad jump out beat her. Queen March ran a good race, but fourth was the best she could do at the finsh. The Wairarana -owned Little River scored in the Consolation Handicap in convincing style. He was ridden in behind for a mile, when his rider took him to the front, and he then won very easily. The runner-up was Mantua, who had a bad passage, but at the finish she got a_ good run on the inside and got up in time to defeat Bonotter, who ran a solid race. Highland was very sore in bis preliminary, and was in the rear the whole way. The connections of Rational were very satisfied with the prospects of the Absurd gblding in the City Handicap, as he had missed the jump away on the middle day. However, he had every chance, but could not fill a place, and is probably in need of a let-up. Tukia lightened up a lot after her race in the Wellington Stakes,, and she was not the same filly on Saturday. The Fordell representative was prominent into the straight, but then she could not pace it with Civility, and in the last few strides. Last Crust also ran nast her. Civility has been consistent, and thoroughly deserved her win. Economist was expected to race well in the City Handicap, which was his only appearance at the nice ting, but at no stage of the race did ho threaten danger. Gray was given the mount on Geranial in the Kaitoke Handicap, and the Solferino mare was nearly as well backed as Piquant. Geranial was not nearly so bad at the barrier as in the Douro Cup, but though she ran u good race she could only fill third p'ace. A rank outsider in the Chokebore cast-off, Giantkiller, defeated 'he favourite Piquant in the concluding event. The winner carries the colours of the Lyttelton sportsman Mr. H. Rhind, and he is trained by the well-known huidle horseman A. Wormaid. Piquant improved a lot on her previous showing, but she had to strike her colours to the Riccarton-trained animal. Hytinus was again prominent, but be stopped quickly. ■ Muria was sore and Integrity jumped back at the barrier rise. Off thp unplaced division White

Ensign did the best, and his turn in not far off. . The well-known, trainer G. Jones has purchased Mr. <l. Taylor’s stables at Heretaunga, and in future he will train as a free lance at Trentham. Owing to his departure for England at an early date, Dlr. Erie Riddiford is selling off his horses in training. One of the team that- met. with inquiries c/n Saturday was Scion, for whom 300 guineas was asked. The Poverty Bay ownerj- Mr. A. B. Williams, has, so it is understood, placed a commission in England for a couple of two-year-olds. So far no word has been received as to whether any business has been dome on. bis behalf. . Mr. E. S. Luttrell, who gave 300 guineas for the. Peace colt it the Wai kanae sale, hta since refused an advance of 200 guineas on his bargain. It is understood that a Marlborough syndicate will race the Kilbroney— Rebekah colt, which fetched top price at the Waikanae sale. For the day the totalisator handled £67,109, as against £63,695 on the corresixmding day last year. The total for the meeting was £179,793 10s., as against £185,424 put through at last year’si gathering. TAIGAPUNA MEETING MUSKETOON WINS THE CUP STEWARDS’ HANDICAP TO KING MERY By Telegram—Press AssociationAuckland, January 26. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened to-day. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £53,420, compared, with £56,334 on the corresponding day last year.
