LIQUOR RAIDS
OVER-ZEALOUS POLICE IN WASHINGTON FOREIGN LEGATION ENTERED (Rec. January 27, 11.5 p.m.) New York, January 26. The “New York Times’s” Washington oorrtespondent says the State Department is more or less perturbed as a result of attempts of over-zealous police to enforce prohibition in connection with the raid last month. Mr. Hughes to-day wrote to the Polish Minister, M. Wrobbewski, expressing regret that the police entered the legation. It had been complained that diplomatic immunity had not been observed. Mr. Hughes, however, concluded that it had been determined that the secretary had in his possession a quantity of alcoholic beverages greatly exceeding the privileges and immunities accorded in this regard, and it had been a matter of concern that the diplomatic immunity had been abused, Mr. Hughes, however, was glad to learn that the secretary had been transferred to Warsaw. —Aus.N.Z. Gable Assn. RIGHT TO SEARCH SHIPS (Rec. January 27, 11.5 p.m.) New York, January 26. Sir Auckland Geddes, prior to sailing home by the Aquitania, gave an interpretation of clauses of the liquor treaty. There could be no difficulty in determining an hour's steaming distance, he said. Officials could easily decade tho speed and time necessary by an examination of the engine.—Aus.N.Z. Gable Assn. [Under the treaty the United States has the right to search suspicious vessels believed to be rum-running within an hour’s stleaming of the American shores.]
