NAPIER TOURNAMENT PARKER GETS DECISION OVER PETTIFER (By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Napier, January 27.. At a tournament held by the Napier Boxing Association in the Muncipal Theatre on Saturday night the chief attraction was a contest for a * .£lOO purse between Eddie Parker (light-heavy champion of New Zealand) and Jack Pettifer (formerly of England, but latterly attached to H.M.S. Chatham). The weights announced were: Parker, list. 101 b.; Pettifer, 12st. 61b. As the pair faced each other, Pettifer, sturdily built, looked a good stone heavier than his opponent. He showed excellent 'boxing ability, and for the first two rounds there was little between the two. In the third round Parker opened out more confidently, and soon demonstrated that he was the quicker of the two. He landed on several occasions to the face, and in the clinches got in some telling blows. Meantime the sailor was not idle, and Parker only just missed the full force of a hefty right to his jaw. The fourth round found Parker doing all the leading, and steadily wearing down his opponent. He found an opening in the fifth round, and sent Pettifer to the floor with a blow in the region of the solar plexus. The Chathamite teok the count of nine, and then had to face a determined attack by Parker, who finally sent him to the boards again with a light swing to the jaw. Pettifer was again rising at the count of four, and was obviously disgusted to find that his seconds had already thrown in the towel. Their action may have been premature, but it probably saved him from needless punishment when hte chances of winning had gone. Mr. W. Grant was referee. Prior to the professional contest, the following amateur events were decided: Seastrand (Port Ahuriri). 6st. 51b., beat Drieberg (Napier), 6st. 101 b. Richardson (Napier), Bst., beat Sweeney (Hastings), Bst.; H. Maddox (Hastings), Bst. Rib., beat W. Stevens (Hastings), Bst. lib.; McKenzie (Napier), 9st. lib., beat McFweu (Napier), 9st. 101 b.; Bill Stevens (Hastings), lOst. 21b., beat I. Scarfe (Napier), 9st. 81b. GODFREY DEFEATS SPARGO. (Rec. January 27, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, January 26. After a brilliant display Godfrey defeated Spargo on points in twenty rounds for t’he light-weight championship of Australia. Godfrey was very aggressive and tricky, and pressed Spargo hard, trying for a knock-out. The latter fought back gamely, and had the better of the in-fighting, but Godfrey was too good at long range, and won by a comfortable margin. Spargo was handicapped* by rn injured knee received in a tram accident some time ago. —Press Assn. UREN OUT-POINTED BY BRADLEY (Rec. January 27, 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, January 26.
