NELSON NOTES
PROSPECTS FOR FRUIT INDUSTRY By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Nelson, January 25. • Mr. H. Baigent, owner of the Masonic Hotel, has sold the lease to Mr. AV. Noad, formerly of the Commercial Hotel,, and intends visiting the Old Country. A punt containing C. L : mmer and R. Norris, 'cook on the Alexander, was swamped yesterday afternoon, both men narrowly escaping with their lives owing to the strong current running. The packing sheds are buey-prepar-ing for the export season, which commences early in February. A considerable quantity of apples end pears is now being shipped to payable markers. Generally speaking, the feeling of fruitgrowers is optimistic, partly on account of the improved prospects and reduced freights to England and South America. Strong efforts are being made to regulate'the local markets with the object of securing payable prices in the Dominion. There are good crops in most orchards where cultivation has been attended and suitable manures applied. Black spot is not so serious as in former years and the fruit is of high quality.
