MOTORIST HEAVILY FINED

-■ 1 1 ■— SPEEDING AT CROSSINGS MUST BE STOPPED An indication of the penalty forthcoming for motorists who pursue the highly dangerous practice of speeding over crossings when trains are approaching was given in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday; when Mr. C. R, Orr-Walker, S.M., imposed a fine of £7, with substantial costs, on a Johnsonville resident, L. Charles Tolley, who was charged that when approaching a railway line, he failed to slacken speed within 100 yards of the crossing, and passed over the line when it was not clear. In evidence it was declared that the action of motorists in taking such risks imposed a severe trial on the engine-driver’s nerves. “For the protection of the public. I’ll make the fine a severe one,” said the Magistrate. “It may prevent an accident in ths future.”
