LAWN TENNIS

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENING DAY’S PLAY AT MASTERTON ANDREWS EXTENDED BY POWDRELL '0 By Telegraph. —Special Reporter. Mast’cton, January 19Beautiful weather conditions favoured the commencement of the p el 2 „ nrovincial championship tennis tournament to<iay, and the Worton Club s Dixon Street courts present an animated annoarance. The eleven courts have ’X flooded and skilfully treated, and as a consequence they are playing beautifully, and the club has access to other courts should the necessity arise. Mr H. M. Boddington has the airangements well in hand again this year, and ■p ayers are rounded up promptly m oi- > kr y to prevent the loss of time between matches. There are about l<o individual players, and no fewer than s°° “tries I this vear a slight decrease over the lig- ' ir 1 'for ’last year when there were 210 Individual Players and 576 entnes F. Peach, 11- J- Goodman, and W- M. Fike, of th© Australian team, are present, in the men’s championship singles the seeded players are N. B. Barkman. K. • - Walker, W. M. Pike, M. L. Lampe, R. ,T Goodman, S'- Powdrell, E. D. Andrews, \ G Wallace, E. Salmond, and 1* • Peach. In the ladies’ championship singles Miss J. McLaren, Mrs. W. 4. Melody, Miss M. Macfarlane, Miss Z. Wollwood, Miss M. Payton, and Miss A. Howe were the seeded players. Visiting players express themselves as delighted with the arrangements and the excellence of the courts. An electric megaphone is used advantageously to rouse “players for the next round. The morning and afternoon tea arrangements are in the hands of an energetic ladies committee. Following are the officials of the Masterton- Lawn Tennis Club who are controlling the tournament:—Patron, Monsignor McKenna, V.G.; president, Mr. S. R. Gawith; vice-presidents, Messrs. N. H. James and E. W. Payton ; committee. Messrs. A. H. Daniell. J. V. Gordon. IV. S. Heaps, R. Lee,. A. D. Low, H. H. Pavitt, E. J. Eeid, and G. D. Milson; handicappers, Messrs. H. M. Boddington, S. R. Gawith, J. V. Gordon, N. H. James, A. D. Low, E. J. Heid; re--force, Mr. M. E. Denniston: hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. M. Bodding-' ton.

Play commenced at 8.30 a.m., but most of the matches did not got beyond two sets, and none of the seeded players were defeated.

Some bright play was witnessed in the afternoon, when Andrews was severely shaken in the second round of the men’s championship singles by Powdrell, who not only kept the younger man busy about the base-line, but also made frequent successful excursions to the net. Powdrell captured the first set . comfortably at 6 —2, The Palmerston player, who was obviously off his game in the first set, pulled himself together, and, despite weak volleying and wide drives, took the next set, 6 —4. ITe was leading s—l in the third set when Powdrell showed surprising dash, winning the next two games in brilliant style- But \ndrews found his game, and ran out comfortably at 6—3. If is noteworthy that in this match Andrews experimented with a new fast service, but was obliged, to revert to a weaker though better-controlled service during the second and third sets.

Salmond fought well to reach the third round by decisively beating Marfin, and gave the spectators a flash of his old form. _ In tho opinion of many his backhand is still second to none in New Zealand.

In tho ladies’ championship singles. Miss Nnnier nut up a splendid fight against Aliss McLaren, runner-up in the national singles at Christchurch, and although beaten G—3, 6—2, the score was mo indication of the form of the local lady who will improve with match play. Miss Arita Howe bent ATiss V. Curtis, G—l. G —l. revealing much better form than at Christchurch. The Now Zealand doubles champions, Airs. Melody and Miss AfcLaren, who to date havo gone through three tourneys without losing a set or even boing run te an advantage set, should reach the final of tho ladies’ championsliin doubles, but Afisses MacFarlane and Payton. who have qualified for tho third round by disposing of Airs. Balfour and Afiss Humphries, 6—l. 6—2, will bo a hard nair to beat should they succeed in disposing of Airs. AfcAlaster and Afiss Howe in the semi-final. Afiss AlacFarlane is reproducing her Christchurch form.

Afiss Curtis and Salmond very nearly nulled the game out of the fire against Alelody and Airs. Melody, whom they fully extended. Airs. Alelody is playing steadily, and her low volleying and overhead 'smashing are features of her play.- Alelody, however, has not struck form, but he was frequently a formidable opponent at the net. The Palmerston pair. Hooner and Airs. Smith, aftera strenuous .fight, succumbed to Pike and Afiss Payton, G—4, G—4.

The combined championship doubles is regarded as very open, but Peach and Aliss Wellwood, Alanawatn champions, should fight out tho final against Walker and Miss AfcFarlane.

. A gruelling contest took place between Roy Howe and. a much older lad, T. Tatham. in the third round of the boys’ championship singles, the younger boy finally going down after p'arrowly losing the first set. decisively capturing tho next, and forcing the last to 9—7 in favour of Tatham. His effort was due to steadiness rather than brilliance.

Aliss Norma Welch, in the girls’ championship singles, was set a hard task against the holder, Afiss Alariorie Lee, but although she made a splendid recovery in the second set, faded away in the last, Afiss Lee’s network and volleying proving too severe for her less experienced opponent. Aliss Ina Finlayson. who had tho best of her match with Afiss Ngaire Feast all through, will meet Miss Lee for ths championship on Monday. AU. the handicap matches were characterised by close finishes. The meeting of Airs.. Alelody and Afiss AfcFarlane is being looked forward to with great interest. it being tho first occasion tho pair have met. The matclies between Mrs. AfcAlaster and Aliss WeTlwood. old friends and opponents, and Alisses Howe and Payton, promise exciting tennis. Tho men’s championship singles, for which there are' 64 entrants, should sm splendid contests in the top quarter of the draw. Walker and Barkman will meet in the third round'. Pike and Lampe will also meet on Monday. On present form Lnmne is expected to win-. Goodman (N.S.W.) is waiting for the winner in the fourth round. Andrews will meet Wallace in the fourth round, and if the Waverley man, who is somewhat indisposed at present, strikes form, a bright contest should 'result. Peaeh and Smvthe should meet in the fourth round if tho Now South Wales captain ig on his game.
