Mr. Allan Whittaker has been appointed. clerk for the Rangitikei Licensing Committee, and clerk of the Magistrate’s Court at Marton. Mr. W. D. Southcott, one of New Zealand’s most prominent fruit-grow-ers, died at Hastings on Wednesday morning last. Appreciative reference was made at the meeting of the New Zealand Fruit-growers’ Federation the same day to the valuable services Mr. Southcott had rendered the industry. A vote of condolence with tho deceased gentleman’s relatives was jmssed. Archbishop Mannix, of Melbourne, and Bishop McCarthy, of- Bendigo, arrived at Auckland by the Maheno from Sydney, and were met at the wharf by Bishop Cleary and Bishop Liston and a largo number of Roman Catholic priests. The visiting prelates arc the guests of Bishop Cleary at Ponsonby, and will later come to Wellington to attend the jubilee celebrations of Archbishop Redwood. Archbishop Clune, of Western Australia, who arrived from Sydney by tho Niagara on Monday, and has been staying with Bishop Cleary, has left for Suva. Ho will return to Auckland after spending some weeks in Fiji. Mr. D. M. Rae. M.A., has Ween appointed vice-principal of the Auckland Training College.
