STOLEN JEWELLERY
A“RATHER MEAN” THEFT YOUNG WOMAN SENT TO PRISON Tho theft at Martinborough of a quantity, of. jewellery valued at £5, was admitted by a young domestic, Lily King, who appeared before Mr. C. It. Orr-Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Tho circumstances, as outlined by Chief-Detective Kemp, were that during September last accused, with a man named Thomas Dawson Sly, obtained employment as a married couple at complainant’s farm. Soon after her "-rival, a tie pin disappeared, and Ir gold watch, a gold safety pin. .ar ring valued at £lOO. When ques. --led regarding th’e missing property, accused stated that she had seen complainant’s little boy playing with some jewellery. A few days later she gave notice. “The matter was placed in tho hands of Detective Jarrold,” continued the chief-detec-tive,. “and through the diligence of his inquiries it was ascertained that accused had posted a parcel to a girl named Smith at Ncaruawhia. It was recovered and found to contain the articles mentioned in the charge. . . . Tho ring has not yet been recovered, and wc have been unable to sheet home tho blame to this -woman. The circumstances surrounding the disan pcarance of the ring were most suspicions. Accused, who is a single woman, was once previously convicted for theft of money from n letter. rr, m nresonf theft was a r.afber menu one.” Acting on tho report of tho prebatio> officer, the Magistrate committed acepond to a year’s detention at Point Halswell for reformative purposes.
