THE RACING WORLD

TRENTHAM ACCEPTANCES NOTES AND COMMENTS

Good acceptances have been received for the first day of next' week’s meeting at Trentham. There have been a good many defections, but the racing should still be high class. There will bo a little fast work at Trentham this morning, but only about half-a-dozen, visiting horses are at headquarters. The Taranaki Club is having its jubilee meeting in February, and a gold cup is to be presented to the winner of the Taranaki Cup. Racing will start at noon each day at Trentham. Battle Knight is standing up to his work in Hastings, and managed to win another race, at Wairoa this time. Up to a mile he is hard to beat in the company he is now mixing with. .Clio Martian mare Etta, who was bought by the Sydney lady, Miss Muriel, a short time ago, ran second to Stony in the A.J.C. Handicap, at the A.J.C. Summer Cup Stony is trained by the ex-New Zealander, George Price. Etta was only a fair sort when owned at Wingatui, her size always being against her. IT. Gray was out at tho New Plymouth track on Tuesday riding work. The English importation Peach Brandy, by Call of the Wild—Peach Blossom, will be seen under silk at the Trentham meeting. He started four times in England without success. The American importation Jack Potts was successful at the Manawatu Trotting - meeting yesterday. It was the intention of B. Jarden to race him at the Hutt meeting, but on the morning of the race he was handicapped 72 yards, and so his trainer used the scratching pen. A smart sort of hack is coming to Trentham in the Auckland-owned White Comet. Part of the new grandstand 'will be in use at the forthcoming Trentham meeting. When the building is completed (some time about next Juno) it will he the most up-to-date structure of the kind in Australia or New Zealand. According to reports, the Dunedin Jockey Club made a profit of nearly £lOOO over its summer meeting. Latest cables received in Australia state that the French crack. Epinard, is going to America to race there during tho. current season. The three leading juveniles in New Zealand this season have all raced very consistently. Motley has started four times, running p second in her first effort and then scoring three wins. Inferno has two firsts, a second, and third to his credit, and Killocra has won four times, been second twice, and third once. There was a, mix-up in the Maiden Handicap at Dargaville last Saturday. Owing to some mistake with tho barrier a false start was made, four horses starting, two being left at the barrier. King Multifid and Owen raced the whole of the course, a dead-heat being given. •These two horses went ■. hack, to the barrier. .Six horses started again. Koko being-deft-at the post. .King .Multifid and Owen jumped to the front. Lady Arch, going up at the bend, passed the leaders, winning, by 20 lengths. Moreen came with a dash, beating King Multifid for second place. Time. Imin. 20sec. The stewards held an inquiry afterwards. but decided to pay out on the second start. J. M. Cameron would appear to have been unlucky when his gelding Molyneux was beaten by a head in the Moorefield Handicap (wrote the Sydney writer “Poseidon”). When the horse had cooled down it was found that something in the race had galloped on his hind legs, which 1 were slightly stripped, and he had to be eased up in his work for a few days. His owner states that when the gelding recovers he may be tried over hurdles. He .is the idea of a hurdler, and even if he does not take kindly to this branch of the sport the schooling may have the effect of improving him as a stayer. He seems recently to have failed in the last furlong or so in races beyond a mile. Several instances can bo quoted where schooling over hurdles has had a beneficial effect on horses. TRACK WORK AT RICCARTON Br TELBOnAPH—Press Association. Christchurch, January 16. The No. 6 grass gallop, which was available for fast work at Riccarton to-day, was heavy. Limelight put up a good performance by running the last nine of ten furlongs in 2min. 2 1-Ksoc. Palestrina gave Gay Juliet a big beating over seven furlongs, her time being Imin. 35sec. Gav Juliet could not handle the going. Wild Hind and Top Score sprinted four furlongs. Gay Queen shaped very badly in heavy going, being beaten easily by Tresham and Jubilant. Te Annu Lad ran five furlongs in Imin. lOseo, and Finora covered the same ground in Imin. 9 4-ssec. Te Anau Lad took 41 1-5 sec. for the last, three furlongs. Finora. though assisted by a stable mate, took 43sec.

Glentruin, Economist, and Garagoza were separately _ sprinted three furlongs, their respective times being 39 3-osec., 40 l-ssec., and 42 l-ssec. Murihaupo is not going to Wellington. Glentruin will represent the stable in the Telegraph Handicap. Lucinette and Clareina galloped six furlongs in Imin. 26 8-ssec. Dame Straitlace who was carrying a welter weight, galloped seven furlone s in Imin. 37sec. The following teams leave for Wellington on Thursday night:—H. Cutts with AVild Hind, Winning Hit, and Ragtime; T. H. Gillett with Dame Straitluce, Prince Fcrouz, Sprinkler, and Integrity; G. Murray-Aynsley with Limelight; and W. G. Hobbs with Palestrina, Gay Juliet, and Gay Queen. J. B. Pearson goes to Trenthari on Friday night with Martis, Lucinette, and Clareina. and A. WormaM will take Giantkiller, Zaragoza, and Economist at the same time. J. Lir.dsav with Enace. H. Elbs with Te Anau Lad, and R. Ellis with Finora. go North on Saturday night. C. Emerson and J. Beale have gone South for the Wairio and Gore meetbut they will probably be at Wellington for the last day. During the past few days Limelight has come into a good deal of favour for the Wellington Cup, and with only 7st. 131 b. in the saddle she should lie capable of running out a very solid 12 furlongs. This will be her first venture over such a lengthy course in handicap company.
