PICNIC AT MAIDSTONE PARK

. The employees of Messrs. Hansford ind Mills held their annual picnic on January 5. Fully three hundred people journeyed by rail to Upper Hutt, where a most enjoyable day was spent in the lovely grounds at Maidstone Park. An excellent sports programme was gone through, special attention being paid to the children. Great interest centered in the tug-of-war contest, for which four teams entered. Alter a strenuous pull the steel yard toam defeated the match factory team in the final. The departmental race ioaused a good deal of amusement through two of the principal competitors running off the course and finishing a dead-heat a long way in. the 'rear. Every child attending the picnic received a bag of sweets, a bag of fruit, and a toy. The committee worked linrd to make the picnic such a success.
