EASTBOURNE GALA

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

Very complete arrangements have been made for tho Eastbourne gala, which is to open on Boxing Day, and run until December 29. Members of tho Gala Executive Committee met on Monday evening. Mr. T. Auton occupied‘the'chair. The secretary (Mr. C. S. Winny) reported! on the arrangements made in connection with music for both day and evening, and also in regard to tho various side-shows, of which there aro to be a considerable number. The treasurer (Mr C. McCarlie) and members of the financial committee closely reviewed the financial side of the gala, dealing in particular with the amount it is proposed to finally spend. Reports were also forthcoming in connection with advertising and publicity matters. Mr. S. Fisher, who has charge of the erection of the huge dance floor, which is to be a feature of the whole affair, stated that properly seasoned timber had been procured, and would be on the recreation ground in the coi'rse of the next day or two. Ho stated that as the gala was being conducted for the purpose of raising money to build a football gymnasium, all timber purchased had been procured at such sizes that it could be used in the latter tTuilding, thus saving considerably on the general cost of tho gala. Mr. Fisher donated all tho nails required during the building of booths and dance floor, and tho football club, who was sponsoring the gala, had received many donations of cakes, fancy work, and gifts suitable for disposing of in various ways, of which there was still need for more gifts in this direction. Tho sports programmes, reported the ground supervisor, which were of a varied nature, had been well received by athletes and dancers generally, and entries were expected to be large. A tennis tournament had also been initiated under the jurisdiction of the Muritai Tennis Club, and would consist of the following events: —East Harbour men’s championship singles, open to all comers; combined doubles; men’s doubles and singles ; ladies’ singles ; boys’ singles, competitors to be under 18 years of age. Tho full programme is now available from all tennis chib secretaries, or from Mr. C. T. Andrew, G.P.O. box 888, Wellington. Entries close next Saturday evening at 8 o’clock. Details of the gala are advertised in this issue.
