NEW LAND FOR SETTLEMENT

STATEMENT BY HON. W. NOSWORTHY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, December 14. The Hons. VV. Nosworthy and R. F. Bollard have returned from a trip up ths East Coast, where they went mainly to look at . lands which the Government is anxious shall be made available to desirable settlers. Referring to the land proposed to be opened on the East Coast, the Hon. W. Nosworthy said there would be available some 8343 acres of good land in Waiapu County for selection under tho Disehiarged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915. It was a good area and should be eagerly sought after. The Minister went on to refer to the new lands which the Lands Department was throwing open ipr occupation throughout the Dominion. “At present,” he said, “there was available over 400,000 acres for selection, and in addition to this there would be 204,954 acres of new lands balloted for before March 31 next. These latter comprised the following:—Gisborne land 1 district, 8343 acres; Auckland land district, 32.091 acres; Otago land district. 164.522 acres. “It will thus be seen,” commented Mr. Nosworthy, “that fairIv rapid progress is beinig made by tho Government in the throwing open of suitable areas for settlement.” The Ministers leave for Wairoa to-morrow morning, visit Waikaromoana on Sunday, and go on to Napier on Tuesday.
