Vjce-Rbgal. Tho Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, unveiled the war memorial at ’ Cambridge on Tuesday afternoon, and His Excellency presented the prizes at the breaking-up ceremony of the lona College, Hawke’s Bay, on Wednesday evening. He will perform a similar function at Woodford House School to-day. On Sunday His Excellency will unveil the war memorial at Taradale, and pay a visit to the Old Peoples’ Home at Parke Island. Accompanied by the Hon. Myrtle and ’the Hon. Norah Jellicoe, His Excellency will return to Aupkland on Tuesday morning next.
The Hon. C. J. Parg, Minister of Education, is exporter! to return to New Zealand on December 26. The Australian trip has unfortunately not completely restored his he.alth. Inspector C. R. Broberg, of the Police Commissioner’s Office, Wellington, has been promoted to Superintendent. He will remain in Wellington on the staff of the Commissioner. Among the arrivals from the United Stales by the Tahiti was Mr. Raul Prebisch, of the Financial Secretariat of the Argentine Republic. Mr. Prebisch has been appointed a Commissioner by the Government of the Argentine Republic to visit the United States, New Zealand, and Australia to inquire into and obtain full data relative to the systems of land and income tax in those countries, and also to inquire into the methods of statistical compilation. The death occurred at Wellington Hospital on Wednesday of a wellknown member of the typographical craft, Mr. A. Hawthorne. Hr. Hawthorne accompanied the famous sculler, W. Beach, Home when he defeated Edward Hanlon on the Thames more than three decades ago. The esteem in which the late Mr. Hawthorne was hold was manifested by the representative body of craftsmen who attended his funeral at Karori Cemetery yesterday morning. Captain and Mrs. Whiteman are staying at the Empire Hotel.
Mr. E. Grayndl.er, secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union, left for Melbourne yesterday, after a visit to New Zealand. Mr. A. D. Casson. New Zealand manager for Messrs. Richardson, Orr and Co., Ltd., left yesterday on a business trip to Sydney and Melbourne accompanied by Mrs. Carson.
