THE RACING WORLD

MANAWATU-AUCKLAND ACCEPTANCES 'NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

M. McCarten and R. S. Bagby are now together in the lead for the jockeys’ championship, with 16 winning rides. A. Reed is next with 15.

Motley will be the only representative of Mr. G. M. Currie’s stable at Ellerslie, as it has been decided to race Veil nearer home during the holidays.

The members of J. T. Jamieson’s team for Auckland will not leave Woodville until next Saturday. T. Lloyd has booked for Sunart and: Mireusonta on Tuesday.

Ngata claims two engagements at the Waipa meeting to-day, having been accepted for in the Cup and Ohaupo Welter Handicap. It is more than likely that he will start in the Welter Handicap. A win in this event entails no penalty for the Manawatu Cup, as it is not worth. £lOO to the winner. Ngata should run well forward, as the trank at Te Awamutu is not io hai-d as Fcilding, where he won, and Marton, where he is trained.

The two-year-old Royal Diadem, who competed in the juvenile events at Woodville, has arrived at Ellerslie with a view to racing at the Auckland summer meeting.

Miss Egypt will be ridden in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap by the apprentice G. Holland. ( Musketoon, who is engaged in the Cup at Waipa to-day, galloped seven furlongs with Pompey at Ellerslie on Itiesday morning. They took lmin. 36 3-ssec. on the outside of the course proper, Musketoon being on the outside. Both were going well at the finish. Musketoon will be ridden to-dj y by AV. S. Bagby. Drawbridge is included among the 37 acceptors for the Waipa Maiden Plate, to be decided at Te Awamutu to-day. The English importation has trained on the right way since finishing second to Startle in the Juvenile Stakes at the Poverty Bay spring meeting. He was considered unlucky to lose on that occasion.

The majority of the field in the Te Awamutu Cup to-day are comprised of Auckland Cura candidates, and the race should throw' some light cn their prospects for the big race. Tarleton will be having his first race since returning from Sydney, if ho h» produced at the Waipa meeting to-day. He is in the same race as Ngata, and in view of his important engagements at Ellerslie particular interest attaches to his running. The best of judges in Sydney figured on Tarleton winning the A.J.iJ. Derby, and Mr. Stead, in addition, refused tempting offers for his three-year-old. Tarleton i ndoubtcdl}’ showed them something on which to base their high opinions, and if he is right he has every chance of making gixxl at Ellerslie, where he is meeting the majority of those of his. age on terms very advantageous to himself.

Waitu, who claims an engagement in the Orakau Hack Handicap at the Waipa meeting, is one of Phil Brady’s team. He is one of ihe Quin Abbey stock, and a five-year-old. Another English horse is down to make a first appearance in this country to-day at To Awamutu. This is Lapidary; a son of Black Jester, who has been in the Dominion some nine months. He is reported to be a handsome animal. Lapidary raced on a few occasions in England. The Taranaki clubs received very good nominations for their Holiday meetings. At Stratford they average ahout 26 per race. The recent death of Furious in Australia was due to lockjaw, following upon a trivial abrasion on her neck. Furious altogether won £20,322 in stakes, the largest amount ever won by a mare in Australia, but Deserr tibia’s New Zealand and Australian earnings enabled her to beat Furious for the Australasian mares? record with £23,133. It is stated that the Feilding-owned Mountain Crag, a member of J. T. Gibwn’s team, will, in future be trained nearer home, and is to go to J. Coyk at Marton.

According te reports to hand from Te Awamutu, it is quite possible that the Great Northern St. Leger winner, Royal Box, will be given an oppm> tunity of distinguishing himself as a hurdler before the present season ends. Marton, nominations total 325, which must be regarded as very satisfactory. Following are tho entries for the Marten Cup:—Ngata, Trespass, Bonetter, Listowel. Sunny Loch, Velociform, Alaric, Deucalion, Ora’s Delight, Pirouette, Kareao, Mark Time, Marqueteur, Kilbird, Passionless, Cola Steel, Mountain Crag, Scotch Mixture, Dodo, Criicelle. Sunart, Cleasanta, Askari, Cairo, SuiiuTal ■Codrington.

The Railway Handicap, six furlongs, at Marton has attracted: Martian Miss, Ares, Veil, Sunny Loch, Geranial, Island. Ora’s Delight, Arched, Civility, Halgina, Birkie, Good Sport, Waipatu, Clea-santa, Askari, Regent, Santenio.

The well-known sportsman, Mr. A. B. Cowell, will leave shortly for New Zealand for a well-earned holiday (saya the Sydney “Sportsman”). No racing man takes the business so seriously as Mr. Cowell, and his multitudinous interests have required so much attention that he is glad to have a rest. It is quite possible he may bring back a, horse or two, if he sees any to his liking in the Dominion.

Bathos has now won three races for “Miss Muriel” (says the “Referee”), and, as be has been well backed on each occasion, is now possibly a profitable purchase. He may not be a champion, but in ordinary company is very smart. The Marton course committee reported to a meeting on 'Tuesday that they had visited the course, and had agreed to do away with ihe brush jump in the hollow on tho western side and to erect a portable brush jump on the course proper for steeplechases in the future. The work of iorming the new course is progressing in a satisfactory manner. The grade had. been altered from 1 in 100 to 1 _ in 'BO at the back of the course, which would save shifting a good deal of s,]X)il. All the tracks are in excellent order, and the preparatory work for the meeting well in hand.

The following from the London “Sporting and Dramatic Nows” is amusing and should commend itself to many people who look v the turf to give them a monetary rise. “The young punter opened his morning paper and read the following announcement with much interest: —‘Genuine Information By One in the Know. Send a postal order now for real honestxtogoodness information about horses. Why work in the dark when I can tell you which horses to follow, which not to follow, and which Jo look on at Ten shillings only.’ The young man Tost no time, but dispatched I is money at once, and by return of post he received the following priceless information : ‘Horses to follow —Hearse horses, ■"’xirsea apt to follow—llaDehorses.

An instance of how necessary it is Jsr owners, when nominating horses, t'o read the conditions of the race or races in which they intend to nominate, and, furthermore, when purchasing horses, to make themselves acquainted with the winning forfn of the Horse previous to the time of purchase, was furnished in connection with the Maiden Plate Handicap at the Bay of Plenty meeting (says the “New Zealand Herald”). The conditions of the race stated that it was open to horses owned or trained in the counties of Ohinemuri, Matamata, Rotorua, Opotiki, and Whakatane for two months prior to the date of the meeting, and that had never won an advertised flat race exceeding £3O. Among the horses that accepted for the event was No Mistake, who won the Gordon Handicap of £275 at the A.R.C. spring meeting in 1920, and consequently was not liable. The horse’s rider was weighed out for the race, but the stipendiary steward, Mr. A. Gordon ; drew the owner’s attention to the tact that the horse was not eligible. The entry of the horse showed that the owner, who did not have the horse when he won, either had not read the conditions of the event thoroughly or was not acquainted with the horse’s form prior to going into his possession. It-was well that No Mistake did not start, for, had he won, there would no doubt have been unpleasant consequences m that he must have lost the stake. At the Newmarket bloodstock sales twenty of the late Lord Manton’s mares and. foals were sold for a total of 10,000 guineas, states a Press Association message from London. Mr. Darling paid 9000 guineas for Tetrabazzia, a five-year-old mare by The Tetrarch- —Abazia.
