B.M.A. is Whole-heartedly for Radium
Strong endorsement of the Appeal for the establishment of a Radium Department at Wellington Hospital, and strong advice to the people of Wellington not to do less for the afflicted than the people of Dunedin have done, is contained in the following self-explanatory statement by the Wellington Division of the British Medical Association:— “The Committee of the Wellington Division of the British Medical Association whole-heartedly supports the suggestion to procure a sufficient supply of Radium for the Wellington Hospital. “Although as yet nothing is known of the cause of cancer, and not a great deal is understood regarding the influence of Radium in its treatment; nevertheless this committee has in its possession undeniable evidence of the great benefit that has been derived from Radium treatment in certain cases of cancer at the Dunedin Hospital. “Sufferers from cancer from Auckland to the Bluff are travelling under painful conditions to Dunedin for treatment. In our opinion, if treatment by Radium were available in the four centres, considerable expense and pain would be spared these unfortunate sufferers, “In addition, their treatment could be begun earlier, continued longer, and their cases more carefully observed if undertaken nearer their own home». Thus the results should he even better. “This committee confidently anticipates that the residents of Wellington district will see to it that, the unfortunate sufferers from cancer in their own district may very shortly be able to receive just as efficient treatment as those in the Dunedin district.
