A Press Association' message from Gisborne states that thg Hon. J. G. Coates on Tuesday inspected the authorised route of the Gisborne southwards railway, and spent the night at Ruakituri. Mr. Coates left yesterday morning for the Urerewa Country. The Minister is accompanied by Mr. Kl S. Williams, M.P., Mr. Furkert (Engin-oer-in-Chief), Mr. McVilly (General Manager of Railways), and Mr. Jones (Assistant-Engineer of Railways).
Mr. Justice MacGregor will leave for Gisborne to-morrow in connection with the Supreme Court sittings. Other Judges in Wellington at present are Sir Frederick Chapman, who is sitting with the Pensions Appeal Board, and Mr. Justice Frazer, of'the Arbitration Court. Sir John Salmond is at New Plymouth; Mr. Justice Reed is at Nelson and the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), is at Wanganui. Mr. Fairfield Thompson, who died at Johnsonville on Saturday last, at the age of 79, was one of the first settlers on the Manchester Block. Feilding, arriving in the ship Douglas. About ten years ago. for health reasons. he took up. his residence at Plimmerton. He is survived by Mrs. Thompson, six sons and five daughters. The sons are: William (Feilding), John (Wanganui), Dougal (Mangaweka), Donald (Poranr'ahau), Alexander (Aorangi), and Malcolm (Plimmorton); and the daughters: Mrs. J. Gilchrist (Tnihane), Mrs. Deal (Plimnierton), Mrs. Ivan Miller (Te Kuiti), Mrs. Rotlieram (Khandiillah). At the opening of the annual meeting of the New Zealand Employers’ Association, the president (Mr. T. S. -Weston) referred to the death of Mr. Frank Cooper, secretary of .the Canterbury Employers’ Association, and moved that the meeting regret his death, and express its deepest sympathy with his widow and daughters. Mr. Cooper was one of the hardest working and ablest officials of the association. Ho always had the interests of the federation at heart, and was the best statistician connected with it. Throughout the cost of living cases they would always rely upon him for analysis of cost of living figures, for there were ven* few men who could hold their own with him in that line. All who had been brought into contact with him entertained the warmest respect and affectionate regard for him, for he was humane ,in every respect. The motion was carried in silence, the delegates all rising. Mr. D.’J. McGowan, member of the Wellington Harbour Board and recently elected president of tho Wellington Civic League, is leaving Wellington on Saturday on a business and holiday trip through the North Island. Mrs. McGowan will accompany Mr. McGowan, and it is expected that thev will be away for about u fortnight.
Mr. J. R. G. Sutherland (Mayor of Inglewood) is visiting Wellington.
At tho Presbyterian General Assembly in Christchurch yesterday, the Rev. J. AL Simpson, of Port Chalmers, was appointed representative of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at the 1924 General Assembly of tho Scottish Church. —Press Assn. Captain P. J. Foster, marine superintei'» l ent for the Union Steam Ship Company, is on a business trip to the South Island. Lord Leverhuime is expected to arrive in Auckland from Vancouver by tlie Niagara on December 29. lie will proceed to Wellington to inspect tho works of Messrs. Lover Brot hers, Ltd., there, and will leave for Sydney on January 4.
