RUGBY REFEREES
N.S.W. VISITORS’ IMPRESSIONS.
The following reference to refereeing is made by Mr. T. H. Bosward, manager of tho team of -New South Wales footballers which toured New Zealand recently, in his report on the tour: — “This important branch is mentioned without any desire to be critical, except constructively. We did not lose on account of the men Svith tho whistle, though we were not allowed, in some games, to give the displays we were capable of on account of tho rulings of the referees. We found little difference, generally, in interpretation as compared with. Sydney, but each referee met had his own individual conception of the law. New Zealand itself, therefore, has a task to put its house in order to secure uniformity on some vital railings, such as the tackle, and. bringing the ball into play after tackle. ' “In conference at Wellington with the executive committee of the N.Z. Rugby Union Referees’ Association several recommendations were made, and these are being submitted by that association to your own Referees’ Association with a view to securing assent from the English Rugby Union to incorporating them in the rules ot the game.”
