COASTGUARDS FIRE ON BRITISH SCHOONER
NOTORIOUS SMUGGLER

The British schooner Tomako was challenged six miles out and fired upon by coastguards when she atiompted to escape. She hove to only when two shots had been fired .across her bows. The coastguards boarded her and arrested a notorious smuggler known as • ..nmy DHI •”cC>v. who had 90.000 dollars, admittedly received for smuggled liquor. The Tomako was seized and Hi" crew a<-cstcd and taken to New York gaol. The Tomako had two machine-guns. Two Government cutters effected the arrest armed with 3-inch guns.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
