ALLOTTING THE BASIN RESERVE
CRICKET ASSOCIATION’S DILEMMA The Cricket Assqjiation last night found 1 themselves suddenly faced with the prospect of having to amend longprepared plans for the annual Auckland v. Wellington match on Boxing Day. The chairman (Air. C. G. Mdsoni said that a regrettable mistake Had taken place through the City Council granting the use of the Basin Reserve to the Caledonian Society for Boxing Day, after the Wellington and Auckland Cricket Associations had agreed that their annual match should take place on the Basin at that time. It was the first time durin- ten years of the agreement between the association and the City Council that the. latter had not consulted the .association before allotting the ground to anyone else. The chairman added that a letter had been written to the Caledonian Society, which used Athletic Park last year, asking them if an amicable understanding could be come to. Mr. H. J. Buck: If tho council makes a bungle we have to pay for it, just as if we made it ourselves. Tho chairman said that the Caledonian Society had gone to Athletic Park last year, as they objected to the exorbitant charges of the City Council for the Basin Reserve. The Cricket Association was prepared last year to let the society have the Basin and were prepared to again. (Hear." hear.) This year, however, the ground had been allotted by the council to the sbeiety in August last, but they hail not notified the association until November 24. For two rears running the City Council had humbugged them. It was decided to await a communication from the Caledonian Society.
