I’roTessor Francis William Chapman Haslam, of Havelock North, died in a private hospital in Auckland on Friday, fie was formerly professor of classics at- Canterbury College, Christclnirch, and was on a visit to Auckland. Professor Haslam, who was born in V’eylon in 1848, was educated at the famous Rugby School, where he became head of the school. At Cambridge University he won an exhibition and foundation scholarship, and graduated B._A first-class in the classical tripos of 1870. At the end of 1879 he was appointed professor of classics at Canterbury College, after having been a -astel' in several schools in England. He was a well-known member of the Christchurch Golf Club. When 1 e first went to Canterbury College he was an active tootbafier, and played the game for some time. Ho also instituted the Haslam Shield at Cantterbury College for shooting.
