HYDRO-ELECTRICITY
DOMINION AND OTHER COUNTRIES
An interesting comparison has been made by the Hydro-Electricity Department of the electrical power activities of the world’s chief countries. This shows that New Zealand stands second to Switzerland in the minimum potential horse-power per square mile of territory. The rates per square mile are:—Switzerland, 87.9; New Zealand, 47.8; Norway, 44.2; Denmark, 32.3 ; Italy, 31.6 ; Sweden, 26; Japan, 25.4; France, 22.1; Spain, 20.3; U.S.A., 10.1; Germany, 6.5; Canada, 5.4; Great Britain, 4.8; South Africa, 2.0; Australia, .2. The units per head of population are: Switzerland. 700; Canada, 612; Noriray, 493: U.S.A., 472; Sweden, 364; South Africa, 199; France, 147; Germany, 141 ; Great Britain, 139; New Zealand, 131; Belgium, 97; Japan, 90; Italy, 85; Denmark, 57; Spain, 49: Australia, 48. It should be explained that the New Zealand figures are for last .rear; the remainder are for the year 1920.
