BOWLS

♦ CLUB OPENINGS IN WET weather MID-WINTER CONDITIONS Although nothing could be more remote from bowling weather than that experienced on Saturday afternoon, when a southerly gale, with persistent rain, prevailed, some of the bowling clubs decided to go on with their opening ceremonies. THE HATAITAI CLUB. No" member of tho Hataitai Club ever hopes for fine weather for a club opening; For some years this club has been dogged with bad luck for its opening day, so that Saturday’s experience was no surprise. In opening the season Air. Stanley Gyles welcomed all who crowded the little social hall da the club’s pavilion. He mentioned that it was the fourteenth season, and though the weather was Unpropitious, they were not worrying, as it was quite the usual thing. It had been a very severe winter, and many bowlers had passed away, but the club was fortunate in not losing any of its members. He regretted, however, to say that Mr. S. W. Watson, a former member, died only a few days ago, and the club extended sympathy to liis widow. The Hataitai Club was established in 1910, and its success was due largely to, its founders, for it had been so successful that they had reached the limit in membership—tho 100 mark. In stating that they should • not forget the great foundation work " done by such men as Messrs. Galvin, Mitchell, and Kinniburgh, three life members —the stamp of men who had made the club what it was to-day. Thanks to the greenkeeper the green was again in a high state of perfection. A heavy programme had been provided for the season. The pennants had been reinstated on tho old system, and a new system of club rink competition was to bo tried. He wished the club a successful season. (Applause.) After a verse of the National Anthem was sung, Mr. Gyles called upon Mr. F. Meadowcroft (president of the centre) to make a few remarks appropriate to the occasion. Mr. Meadowcroft congratulated the club on its success at having reached the 100 mark in membership, and said it was wise for a one-green club to limit its membership, for if they did not it always caused heartburnings from those who were unable to get a game. The president and Mrs. Gyles, with some of the “water babies ! ’ then returned below to the green, where Mrs. Gyles launched the first jack successfully, and her husband declared the green open for the season. An orchestra, songs, dancing, and afternoon tea served to pass away a pleasant afternoon. Much of the credit for this happy little gathering was due to the secretary (Mr. James Kershaw). KARORI CLUB. The Karori Club held its opening though it rained just as hard out there as elsewhere. The president (Mr. Al. P. Spiers) cordially welcomed members and visitors,, and in commenting on the value or such a club in the district, said that all praise ,was due to the foundation members. Mr. Spiers considered it was too wet for long speeches, so he asked Mrs. Spiers to throw up the first jack, and Mr. AV. Bradnock (a foundation member) to throw up the first bowl, after which he declared the green open for the season, amidst applause. The afternoon was spent in the newly-enlarged socal hall by holding a euchre tournament, with a pleasant break for afternoon tea. Mrs. Henderson won tho first prize, and Miss Henderson the consolation prize. ISLAND BAY, At Island Bay green a large number of members attended the official opening ceremonv. The vice-president (Mr. William Kerr) apologised for the ab-

sence of the president (Mr. A. S. Collins).' on the ground of indifferent health, and heartily welcomed visitors and members, including His Worship the Mavor (Air. H. A. Wricht; M.P.). The Island Bav Club, he said, opened in 1918 with fewer than 40 members, and had graduallv increased, until today there was an active membership of 96. and a considerable .hon. membership. while as the creeps could be further extended, it was honed to still increase the membership. Ho thanked all those, including the ladies, who had helned to nut the club in its present satisfactory position. The club could now nlav eleven rinks, and, with the inclusion of available, ground, fourteen rinks, which placed it in the position of the second largest green in Wellington His Worship the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright. M.P.), complimented members of the club on the progress made, both in the past year, and since the club’s inception. Island Bay was making great headway; it was. a district that would continue to grow. Bowling clubs always seemed to grow with the population, so that the Island Bay Bowling Club might find itself forced to greatlv increase its greens in the future. If men never did anything worse than nlay howls, thev would not go far wrong, and he looked forward to the time when he would be able to play bowls himself. He wished thejn a happv and prosperous season. “Kittv” was thrown bv Mrs. Collins. and the green then formally declared open. During afternoon tea, the health of the veteran delegate to the centre (Mr. J. Gruar) was drunk with musical honours, and a plpasant afternoon was spent, deSpite the miserable weather.
