MANGAHAO POWER

KHANDALLAH SUB-STATION

Khandallah is to be the gateway to Wellington as far as electrical power from Mangahao is concerned. The current will come from Mangahao along high-tension wires, with a voltage of 110,000, but at Khandallah a substation will intercept the power and reissue it to Wellington City at 11,000 watts A.C., after which it will be the city Council’s duty to break it down to the required 230 volts A.C. for lighting purposes or 600 volts D.C. for the tramways. The new Government sub-station to bo erected by the Fletcher Construction Company at a cost of £13,0043 will be situated on a corner block about four acres in extent at the junction of Cashmere Avenue and Kupe Street, in Khandallah North, and will be the first big building fulfilling an important public utility in Khandallah. The structure, which is to be of reinforced concrete, will consist of a main building (90ft. x 40ft.), and the necessary subsidiary buildings, such as an oil store, workshop, etc. One section of the main building will consist of a basement (containing small transformers and batteries for local station lighting), the switchboard gallery (first floor), and offices above. Six big transformers in two banks will be located outside. The larger half of the main building—undivided by floors —is reserved for machinery for the correction of errors. One end of the station will be brickedl up so that it may at any time be readily extended. Twenty-six weeks is the contract time for th job, which was commenced on Monday. The sub-station will be about twice the capacity of the station at Addington, where the Lake Coleridge power is broken down for the use of Christchurch.
