UNITED STATES NATIONAL DOUBLES ANDERSON AND HAWKES REACH SEMI-FINALS (Rec. August 23, 5.5 p.m.) Chestnut Hills, August 22. Alonzo and Johnson defeated Schlesinger and Mclnnes, 4 —6, 4 —6, 6 —4, 7 —5. 7 —5, in one of the most bril-, liant matches played' during the tournament. The Australians were leading 4—l in the third set. when their opponents, getting a lucky break, assumed. the lead and worked to victory, though nearly all the games, went to deuce and each point was hard fought. Hawkes and Anderson Seat Criffin and Johnston. Hawkes and Anderson defeated Griffin and Johnston, 6—4, 4—6, <7—s, 6—2. The Australians played magnificent tennis and were superior throughout, earning the victory over the American pair, who rank high. Hawkes’s steadiness and . Anderson’s hard hitting counted heavily, Griflin falling down in the pinches. Anderson and Hawkes, by defeating Johnston and Griffin in the third round of the National Doubles, advance into the semi-finals. The Australians got straight off the mark and played excellent tennis throughout. Hawkes was particularly good and played brilliantly, his return of the service being excellent. Anderson, though patchy, was in excellent form, his forehand drive working excellently and his smashing was severe. The Australians were fortunate in striking Johnston in rather an inaccurate mood, mishitting his forehand and netting many volleys. Anderson and Hawkes to-morrow will meet Williams and Washburn. Alonzo and Johnson defeated MoInnes and Schlesinger only after a hard struggle. The Australians, after losing the third set. again led in the fourth, but again slumped, and their opponents went out in the fifth set, their greater experience’triumphing in pinches. Tilden and Morton defeated Ingra-> ham and Jones 6—2, 6—l, 6—3. Williams and Washburn defeated Gar’dner and Johnson, 6—o, 6 —3, 6—3. Tilden and Williams both played brilliantly.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. WOMEN’S INVITATION TOURNEY New York, August 21. In the semi-finals of the women’s invitation tourney at Rhode Island/ Mrs. Molla Mallory (America) defeat-' ed Miss E. Goss (America), 11 —9, 6 —3, and Mrs. R. C. Clayton (England) defeated Mrs. Covell (England), 6—l, 6—2.
In the doubles, Mrs. R. C. Clayton and Mrs. Beamish (England) defeated Miss Baker and Miss Schaxman (America), 6 —l, 3 —6, 6 —3.—Aus.N.Z. Cab'e Assn.
