INSULIN TREATMENT
SUCCESS AT WELLINGTON HOSPITAL
A report on the success attending the use of the insulin treatment for diabetes at the hospital was presented to the Hospital Board yesterday by Dr. H. B. Ewen (acting medical superintendent). “Since the beginning of August ” he stated, “three patients suffering from diabetes melitus have been under treatment with insulin. Two of these have shown marked improvement. The treatment is by no means simple, and its use apart from strict laboratory control is fraught with grave danger. On this account the treatment will be confined for some time to come to the main centres whore there are fully equipped scientific laboratories. For this reason it has been decided to make special arrangements in this hospital; and as sufficient supplies of insulin are now available we shall be able to treat up to 25 nationts as from September 1 next. While our experience with this remedy has so far been very satisfactory. sufferers from, ths disease should not be misled into thinking that every patent can be cured. Evidence is accumulating that there are. a few who are hot even relieved by its application.” Mr. C. M. Luke, mentioned that although they only had a small quantity •of insulin. Dr. Wilson had arranged for si regular supply at Toronto, and when that arrived they would be able to take a greater number of patients for treatment.
