SLIPPING AWAY

INVESTIGATIONS ON EAST ISLAND

A few days ago a huge land slip was reported to have occurred on East Island, situated off the East Cape. In view of this, and earlier reports that the island was in danger of disappearing altogether, the Government steamer Tutanekai. now on her periodical visit to northern lighthouses, was instructed to call at the island, and investigate. ’Die steamer was expected at tho island yesterday, but as there arc no means of communication, a report will probably not be ava-’lable before next Monday, when the Tutanekai will call in at Auckland. The Secretary for Marino stated to a Dominion representative yesterday that the slipping away was attributed to subterranean decav. Some twelve months ago the lighthouse on the island was shifted to the mainland for safety’s sake. The ligbtliouse-keepers did not care to live on the island.
